How To Enable Hyper-V in Windows 10

There may be several reasons that you need a virtual environment. And to bring the virtualization capability to Windows, Microsoft has made its Virtual Machine software that is known as Hyper-V.

In this article, you will know about Hyper-V and the ways to enable Hyper-V in Windows 10.

What is Hyper-V?

Hyper-V stands for hypervisor virtualization. It is a hardware virtualization application that is developed by Microsoft. It enables you to run any of the virtual machines that you want to.

A virtual machine behaves like a separate and complete computer, that runs a fully functional operating system along with its programs. This gives you more flexibility and also saves your time and money.

You can run even more than one virtual machine on the same hardware simultaneously, which the help of Hyper-V.

With the help of Hyper-V, you can use your hardware more effectively and improve your business continuity.

Hyper-V was introduced in Windows 10 and before this, there were some other virtualization applications like MS Virtual PC, MS Virtual Server, and Windows Virtual PC. But Hyper-V was introduced with better performance, security, and features that were not included in the older virtualization products.

Requirements for Hyper-V

Hyper-V runs on almost every hardware if it meets some of the basic requirements. So, make sure that the requirements listed below are present on your computer.

  • Any Windows 10 operating system, other than Windows 10 Home Edition.
  • A 64-bit architecture processor that supports virtualization extension or Second Level Address Translation (SLAT).
  • Minimum 4 GB of system memory / RAM.
  • Hardware virtualization support for BIOS.

Configuring BIOS Settings

Before proceeding to enable Hyper-V in Windows 10, you must make sure that hardware virtualization is enabled in the BIOS Settings.

By default, Hardware Virtualization is disabled on any machine. You can turn it ON with the help of the following steps.

  • Open your BIOS settings on startup. To access BIOS, you have to press the BIOS key, which may be F1, F2, F10, F12 or Delete. You can also search your PC model on google to know the BIOS key.
  • Head towards the Configuration tab.
  • Go to something like Hardware Virtualization and enable it from there.
  • Now save your Settings and Restart your PC.
